As the Dungeons & Dragons rules grew more and more complex, TSR saw the need to revise the rules. the result was Advanced Dungeons & Dragons aka AD&D. Until the release of the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition rules, which were actually the third edition of the AD&D rules, AD&D was the best supported and most played RPG around. It is out of print now, but many adventures and source books in PDF format may be bought online.

AD&D features a class and level system and relies heavily on dice and character stats. Characters are rolled up first, then race and class (occupation) are chosen. In addition to the standard attributes and skills, characters have an alignment, showing if a character is good, evil or neutral. Characters gain levels by collecting experience points, so they become stronger, get more skills or spells, etc.

The outcome of fights is dependent on an abstract number that represents the ability to fight. This number is modified by weapon skills, dexterity bonusses and the armor of the enemy. If you pass a test using this number, you score a hit. Combat is very dangerous in AD&D. Especially novice characters have only a few hitpoints. Wizards for example start with 1-4 points. A short sword or bow does 1-6 points of damage, so only one hit may be lethal.

Magic items and other treasures are very common in most AD&D campaigns. This can come in very handy if you take a look at the hordes of monsters available from several supplements, some of which can only be wounded by magic weapons. Most adventures and source books contain new monsters, magical items or spells.

To start with AD&D a group of player's needs at least the Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master Guide.
